Rowing Testing
Last Friday coaches from the Academy of Sport Rowing program came to Karabar High School to assess students identified as having possible talent for the sport of rowing.
Gordon Marks - head coach for ACTAS rowing conducted the testing which involved the students height, arm span and weight being recorded and leg and arm strength and endurance capabilities being tested on a bike ergometer.
Rowing Australia is currently looking at identifying the next generation of Elite Rowers and as Gordon said to the students "these people need to come from somewhere - so why not from Karabar High School?"
Those of you aware of Karabar's history would already know that two of Australia's Elite Rowers where selected from the ranks of Karabar by similar testing programs held in the 90's. These being Megan Still (Marks) and Craig Jones who both went onto represent Australia at World Cup and Olympic levels, Megan winning Gold at the Atlanta Olympics in the Women's Pair event.
Results will be sent to the school and students notified. All students involved found the experience eye opening, if not a little exhausting as they were required to extend themselves to their limits.
I would like to thank Gordon for looking to Karabar for possible talent and his time with the students. I also thank the students for their efforts and look forward to directing them for further testing. Students who did not qualify for these first round of test, Gordon is intending to return to Karabar at a later date to conduct further testing.
